The German contractor Jak. Gärtner & Söhne GmbH from Lampertheim in Germany proves that the GRUNDOMAT can become a standard tool. We visited them on a construction site and were thrilled to see how Klaus Gärtner's team uses trenchless technology to conserve resources and spare the nerves of local residents.

It is a sunny Monday in February, and on the way to the construction site you can already hear the typical sound of a GRUNDOMAT hammer. And then we are standing right in the middle of it, on a building site that you can hardly see. Admittedly, this would be our dream scenario for a trenchless pipe installation site, but the reality is somewhat different and also no less fascinating.

We visit a construction site of Jak. Gärtner & Söhne GmbH in Lampertheim Hofheim, where the company with 65 employees is using the GRUNDOMAT soil displacement hammer to connect around 20 houses in Bahnhofsstraße to the newly laid water main in the first phase of contruction. And indeed, when we arrive, we hear the typical sound of the of the 'mole'. The new water main is on the left side of the road. As there are many existing pipes underneath the pavement, the house connection team from Jak. Gärtner & Söhne GmbH first 'shoots' under the road to the opposite pavement and from there trenchlessly through the front gardens of the residents to the target pit at each house. The soil is loamy and allows the GRUNDOMAT to make slow progress, but soon after the machine has penetrated the ground, you can feel that it is moving forward much faster. The team work is well praticed, so that the house connections are gradually being completed despite the difficult soil conditions.

The skilled and smooth way of working impressed us and so we asked Klaus Gärtner why his team is so successful in in the house connection sector.

Klaus and Patrick Gärtner, Firma Jak. Gärtner & Söhne GmbH from Lampertheim.

Mr Gärtner, we are very pleased to be able to visit your construction site and are impressed by the way your house connection team works so routinely with the GRUNDOMAT. Is this because you have been working with trenchless technology for so long?
Yes, that's right. The company Jak. Gärtner & Söhne GmbH was founded in 1916. When I joined the company in the early 1990s the soil displacement hammer was already a well-known and frequently used tool.

That's a long time, how many machines do you have in your fleet?
At the moment we have about 15 GRUNDOMAT in various sizes, ranging from the 45 and 75 to the 95 and 130 mm hammers.

So it's fair to say that you're a great advocate of trenchless technology?
Wherever possible, definitely. We always use trenchless when it makes sense, and especially when it can save people's beautiful front gardens.

But of course we also do civil engineering work using conventional construction methods, e.g. for gas and water or cable installation. We also build roads and sewers in smaller areas, i. e. the development of smaller building sites. But we always like to use trenchless technology where it is sensible and possible.

That sounds exciting, tell us why you rely on TRACTO´s GRUNDOMAT?
On the one hand, the GRUNDOMAT soil displacement hammer works very reliably and precisely. But I am also convinced of the good service from TRACTO. If we have any questions or even problems on site, someone is there immediately to help us. We always feel well advised and looked after, which is one of the main reasons why we are using TRACTO equipment.

Your son is here with you, so the next generation of entrepreneurs is already waiting in the wings.
Patrick Gärtner, will you continue to use trenchless technologies and TRACTO products?

That is the plan, yes. I manage our house connection team and they use the GRUNDOMAT every day. Whenever possible, we use the hammer for house connections because it is much faster, easier and more efficient.

The perfect closing remarks! Thank you very much for the interview and for letting us visit your site. Your success story shows that trenchless technology is indispensable in pipeline construction and is increasingly becoming the standard.
Thank you very much!
